IMAGES POLICY
Introduction
Australian Marist Solidarity (AMS) is the international development arm of the Marist Brothers Star of the Sea Province
and the Marist Association of St Marcellin Champagnat. It has a particular focus on empowering young people to
transform their lives and community. Promoting the dignity of the human person, as safeguarded by internationally
recognised human rights conventions, is a core value of AMS.
Australian Marist Solidarity produces digital and print publications from time to time for the purposes of publicising its
work, for fundraising and for advocacy. Promotional material is produced and distributed through various media such
as:
• Internet sites, including the Australian Marist Solidarity website and third-party fundraising platforms.
• Official social media platforms, such as YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn
• External publications, such as newspapers and magazines
• Australian Marist Solidarity publications such as Annual Reports, Solidarity Matters posters, and flyers
• Reports and proposals related to fundraising and donor reporting
Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to ensure the collection and use of photographs and/or film (images):
• Protects the personal information of individuals
• Protects the identity of children involved in child protection or legal matters
• Respects the individual's right to control how and for what purpose their personal information is used
Scope
This policy applies to all Board members, committee members, staff, contractors, partners, agents and volunteers who
operate under the auspices of AMS.
It covers both still (photographs) and moving (video) imagery and recorded, transcribed or written interviews and direct
quotes, whether collected by Australian Marist Solidarity or sourced from third parties. It applies to information, stories
and images collected for research, evaluation, donor, supporter and public engagement purposes and all material
published by Australian Marist Solidarity regardless of format.
Policy
Images and personal stories about the people we work with play a vital role in helping Australian Marist Solidarity raise
awareness about marginalised children and young people, in bringing Australian Marist Solidarity’s work to life and in
engaging supporters and the public. However, in collecting and using these images and stories, we have a responsibility
to protect the women, men, boys and girls that we are portraying, and to communicate truthfully with our audiences.
We must ensure that all content is collected and used ethically, honestly and sensitively and with respect for people’s
dignity and culture.
Our content should be spirited, active and ultimately hopeful. Our communications should reflect people, their
experiences and the context of situations truthfully and authentically, and accurately describe the nature, scope and
impact of Australian Marist Solidarity’s work.
Free, prior and informed consent is obtained for all images and stories collected by AMS, from the project partners which
we work with.
AMS will not use a beneficiary’s image, name or personal information without their permission.
AMS will not use children in promotional materials to raise funds for adult causes, giving the impression that the
beneficiaries are childlike.
AMS will not use images that are demeaning, discriminatory, pornographic or unduly violent towards a person or group.
Responsibilities
All team members have a responsibility to ensure appropriate use of images in AMS publications. The Communications
team is responsible for ensuring no images are published in violation of the AMS Images policy.
Implementation
The implementation of this policy will be guided by the AMS Operations Manual. Access to this policy will be provided
to all relevant parties.
Monitoring and Review of Policy
AMS will undertake a review of this policy in accordance with the AMS review process, or sooner if required. This review
will be undertaken by the CEO, AMS staff and reviewed by the AMS Finance, Audit & Risk and Community Engagement &
Fundraising Committees and the Board of Directors.
